II General News
Special guest Don Duncan, California Director of ASA
Americans for Safe Access Monthly Activist Newsletter February 2008
The Washington Times ran an article about the 5 DEA raids on medical cannabis dispensaries
that have occurred in California since President Obama took office. In the piece, White
House spokesman Nick Shapiro said, “The President believes that federal resources should
not be used to circumvent state laws, and as he continues to appoint senior leadership to
fill out the ranks of the federal government, he expects them to review their policies
with that in mind.”

The following morning, over 130 protesters organized a response to the raid in front of
the Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles.
Local Nurse Brings the Medicinal Cannabis Fight to the Feds Alibi New Mexico
Psychiatric nurse Bryan Krumm’s opinion of the state’s medical marijuana program is not an
uncommon one. “Until they can keep the federal government out of the program, they are
not going to be able to make our program functional.” The Department of Health established
regulations regarding the growth and distribution of medical marijuana last week. The
department accepting applications from nonprofit businesses interested in producing
medical marijuana. Krumm filed suit against the U.S. attorney and others in District
Court to combat federal interference, and he’s using a stipulation in the Controlled
Substances Act to do it. (15 Jan 2009) http://www.mapinc.org/newscc/v09/n052/a05.html
– Charles Lynch is the former owner of the medical marijuana dispensary in Morro Bay, the
one that was shut down when the local sheriff called in the feds to shut him down. Lynch
is set to be sentenced Feb. 23 at 8:30 a.m. – facing 100 years in prison!

Big news from Rudy Reyes – DEA Guest Speaker
2/2 “Ground Hog Day Raids” – The raids this last week, all/most? the cases are linked to
a local patient “Jessica Owen” and/or CANORML list. The few people I have confirmed (at
least 4) were all entrapped by a long-haired guy using the name Jaime Conlon (the
undercover cop) who met the people at a house in Navy housing on Pico St in the Pt. Loma
area. They (cops) say the whole set up is caught on tape. Therefore, hopefully the victims
(these local mobile dispensaries) will be able to defend themselves in court.
Lessons: 1) Better communication, ie. text system 2) Be prepared – bail, PHONE #s, plan
3) Be careful 4) Support ASA and those people who already have cases, civil and
criminal.
Planned Response? – Support these people through the system. Demonstrate? I say regulate.
